Volunteering in Auckland: Help Create Connection and Community
Every day in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, friends and whānau are sleeping rough, struggling to access basic amenities, and going days without kōreroconversation.
As the cost of living rises and housing becomes more out of reach, homelessness in New Zealand continues to grow, and right here in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the need for support has never been greater. For those wanting to help out in their local community, volunteering with Orange Sky offers a simple but powerful way to connect.
Auckland was the very first city in Aotearoa where we rolled out our service, starting with just one van and a few passionate tūao (volunteers). Today, that has grown into a trusted, welcoming kaupapa with 10 different shifts running across the city each week, creating safe spaces for kōrero, connection, and care in communities that need it most.
Behind every number is a person – a story, a face, a life. As demand increases, so does the call for more tūao. In this blog, we’ll explore what that looks like on the ground and why volunteers are still needed in Auckland today.
We launched Orange Sky’s first Aotearoa service in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on World Homeless Day in October 2018, after seeing a clear need for practical, community-based support, something consistent that could meet people where they were.
At the time, local groups were already calling attention to the number of people without access to essentials. But what struck us most was the isolation. It wasn’t just about clean clothes or a warm shower – it was about connection, routine, and feeling seen.
Today, that need is only growing. In the past four months alone, Auckland has seen a 53% increase in the number of people doing it tough, according to Auckland Council. Rising living costs and ongoing housing pressures are pushing more people into vulnerable situations, while many support systems are stretched thin.
That’s why our mahi in Auckland matters more than ever. A warm hello and a genuine conversation can go a long way – reminding someone they’re not alone, and that they’re part of a community that cares.
“Being on the streets is never going to be easy. Time is always against you.”
For Kenny, those words aren’t just a reflection – they’re a daily reality. As a man in his forties, Kenny has been experiencing homelessness on and off since 2018. At first, Kenny relied on public laundromats and swimming pool showers in South Auckland to get by. However, after moving closer to the city, it became all too expensive. “That’s why I’m thankful for Orange Sky. It’s made things easier,” he says.
Orange Sky isn’t just about clean clothes – it’s about what happens while the washing is on. Moments of connection. Kōrero breaks the silence of a long day. For many friends and whānau, it’s one of the few places where they can pause, breathe, and just be themselves.
That’s what makes volunteer work in Auckland so valuable. It’s not only about running the service, it’s about showing up with empathy, building trust over time, and being part of a community that listens. Tūao, like Glenn, knows just how meaningful that can be.
Volunteering with Orange Sky in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland means becoming part of a wider whānau – one built on empathy, teamwork, and trust.
Each shift is a chance to meet people from all corners of the city, coming together to create a safe, welcoming space for friends and whānau doing it tough.
It’s often the small, quiet moments of kōrero while the washing spins or a coffee is shared where real connection happens. Those conversations are what make volunteering in Auckland with Orange Sky so special.
Week after week, Glenn saw how a simple kōrero, even just a few minutes of listening, can shift someone’s whole day.
“Having a simple conversation is important for anyone. A lot of the friends who sit down and have a chat with us – we may be the only conversation that they have for that day.”
Giving back is something that runs deep for Glenn. He grew up surrounded by whānau who fostered children and gave their time freely – a legacy he’s proud to continue.
“Volunteering is in my blood, it’s who I am. If you’re thinking about joining Orange Sky or perhaps making a donation, I’d really encourage it. Whether it’s your time or a financial donation, it’s time and money well spent, on a deserving cause.”
We need you.
